Heritable variation in telomere length predicts mortality in Soay sheep

نویسندگان

چکیده

Significance Telomeres play an important role in aging, and having relatively short telomeres is associated with increased risk of death humans other animals. Telomere length influenced by both genetic environmental factors, which could potentially drive the positive association survival. We used lifelong telomere measurements from a population wild sheep to disentangle this relationship. Our analyses reveal correlation between longevity but no shortening mortality risk. These findings have implications for our understanding dynamics their health lifespan.

Telomere length in early life predicts lifespan.

The attrition of telomeres, the ends of eukaryote chromosomes, is thought to play an important role in cell deterioration with advancing age. The observed variation in telomere length among individuals of the same age is therefore thought to be related to variation in potential longevity. Studies of this relationship are hampered by the time scale over which individuals need to be followed, par...

securitization of mortality risks in life annuities

insurers have in the past few decades faced longevity risks - the risk that annuitants survive more than expected - and therefore need a new approach to manage this new risk. in this dissertation we survey methods that hedge longevity risks. these methods use securitization to manage risk, so using modern financial and insurance pricing models, especially wang transform and actuarial concepts, ...

Leukocyte telomere length predicts cancer risk in Barrett's esophagus.

PURPOSE Leukocyte telomere length has gained attention as a marker of oxidative damage and age-related diseases, including cancer. We hypothesize that leukocyte telomere length might be able to predict future risk of cancer and examined this in a cohort of patients with Barrett's esophagus, who are at increased risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma and thus were enrolled in a long-term cancer surve...

Nestling telomere shortening, but not telomere length, reflects developmental stress and predicts survival in wild birds.

Developmental stressors often have long-term fitness consequences, but linking offspring traits to fitness prospects has remained a challenge. Telomere length predicts mortality in adult birds, and may provide a link between developmental conditions and fitness prospects. Here, we examine the effects of manipulated brood size on growth, telomere dynamics and post-fledging survival in free-livin...

Seasonal variation in telomere length of a hibernating rodent.

Small hibernating rodents have greater maximum lifespans and hence appear to age more slowly than similar-sized non-hibernators. We tested for a direct effect of hibernation on somatic maintenance and ageing by measuring seasonal changes in relative telomere length (RTL) in the edible dormouse Glis glis. Average RTL in our population did not change significantly over the hibernation season, and...
